A Simple Miracle…Hypnosis?

In the last several years, I have never ceased to be amazed at the simple, yet almost miraculous effects of hypnosis on individuals. It doesn’t seem to matter how stressed a person is, after a session the stress has “miraculously” gone away! This is one such case of the thousands I have been privileged to experience.
Her name was Maria, and she came in for a session during one of my volunteer projects in our community. She was a mother of a beautiful little girl. Another lady, Kiresha, came in about the same time. Both were very stressed from the day’s activities and asked if hypnosis could help them. I just smiled and said, “There’s only one way to know for sure and based on my years of experience and training…YES”! A couple from my church had stopped by to assist me, in case I needed a witness or someone to watch a child for a few minutes (It is best to have a witness for your protection, regardless of how honorable you are…I’m an ordained minister!). A local business had provided me space to give these free sessions for my project.
I told the ladies that we could do a joint session for stress relief. My friends gave them some water and I proceeded to answer any questions they had about hypnosis/hypnotherapy (rapport). You could see the tension begin to melt in their faces as their fears and misinformation melted away to fact. My friends, who had been in a session for stress the day before, were singing the praises of the effectiveness of hypnosis as they were getting them the water! Within five minutes Maria and Kiresha were very ready to experience stress relief and we began our session.
Each lady had a comfortable, padded chair. As we all took a seat, the two facing me with a modesty blanket to cover their legs, I began the session. Although many schools of hypnosis teach to touch people, I have found that it is not necessary and especially if you do not know the person very well. As Dr. Brady continuously says, “It is not necessary.” I began the patter (my own, not from script but from heart and experience):
Ladies, I want you to close your eyes, leave your right hand where I can see your index finger so you can respond to me later, and begin to relax…Take a deep breath and hold it for just a second…now exhale and let all of the tension and anxiety of the day leave you. Take another breath and hold it…now exhale and let all of the tension of the day leave you now (my voice gets slower and lower in pitch). Listen to the sounds around you. You may here traffic, people talking, a phone ringing…whatever you here for the rest of this session will take you twice as deep into relaxation as you are now. Listen to the sounds and experience yourself going deeper …even NOW. (pause for a few seconds) Take a deep breath and hold it for a second…as you exhale, picture a wave of relaxation from the top of your head moving safely, slowly, surely…touching every muscle –relaxing each muscle ten times more than before…even to the tips of your toes. ---Repeated two more times varying pitch and speed of delivery--- Now, take your next DEEP breath…hold it.as you exhale and release a new wave of relaxation, picture the back of your neck. Next to it you see several blocks. Notice as you pick up a block, a name appears on it…a name you want represented by that block, such as stress, tension, headache, pain, anxiety, worry, fear…whatever you want it to be labeled will appear on it as you pick it up. Stack each block you pick up on your neck. You may use as many or as few blocks as you need. Each block you stack will take you ten times deeper. When you have stacked your blocks and are ready to continue, let me know by moving your right index finger. Great! Now I want you to move your neck and shoulders just a little and experience the stiffness from all of those blocks, knowing that very soon they will all be gone. Let me know when you have done this by moving your right index finger. Great! Take your next deep breath and let the next wave of relaxation begin…touching every muscle…relaxing ten times more than the wave before. As you go deeper and deeper with every breath, my voice takes you twice as deep.
At this time I want to address your Subconscious on your behalf and with you permission. Subconscious, I am here to help Maria and Kiresha get rid of their stress today. I ask on their behalf for your assistance in bringing this healing to them. They are very special ladies and greatly deserve your assistance. Let me know that you will work with me by moving the right index finger. Great! Now I charge you Subconscious to enhance their imaginations, take them even to sleep while keeping them focused on every single word I say.
Maria and Kiresha, focus now on the muscles in your eyes. Feel each muscle and how wonderful it feels for your eyes to be closed. Feel your eyelids and how wonderful they feel to be closed…notice now that together the muscles in your eyes and your eyelids want to stay closed during the session and will NOT open until I snap my fingers at the end of the session. Your eyes will stay closed as you try to open them NOW…as you try to open them…you cannot…Relax, forget your eyelids and eye muscles for the moment and go ten times deeper BECAUSE you did such a great job…Your small muscle groups are totally relaxed (convincer #1 for them that they have been hypnotized).
Maria and Kiresha, picture now your necks as the new wave gets to it. Notice that the wave gently picks up each and every block and is safely moving them down your shoulders…down your arms… and is temporarily settling them in your elbows…temporarily settling them in your elbows, as the wave continues to flow, relaxing each and every muscle as it goes ten times more than the last wave…even to the tips of your toes. Ladies, move your neck and shoulder now and experience that all of the stiffness and tension are gone! Once you have experienced how wonderful it is to feel tension free…move your right index finger…Great! Take a deep breath and let a new wave of relaxation begin…notice as this wave gets to the blocks it gently lifts them up in a perfect row and moves them forward…safely, gently, through your forearms…through your wrists…through the palms of your hands…and each block is gently, safely settling in your finger tips…only one block per fingertip…When this is complete, move your neck, shoulders, arms, hands and notice all signs of tension and stress are gone …all that remains is temporarily in your finger tips. As you have experienced this, let me know by moving your right index finger. Great!
Now I want you to begin to picture a beautiful scene…imagine what tiny little fireworks look like…tiny little fireworks…green, blue, red, and yellow, exploding into space. When you see these fireworks, let me know by moving your right index finger. Great!
Take your next breath and let a new relaxing wave begin…relaxing as it goes…each and every muscle it touches, relaxes ten times more than the last wave…you’re focusing in on each end every word I say while relaxing even to sleep (a relative term for deep relaxation). Now picture the wave nearing your neck…notice how surely and safely it travels, relaxing as it goes, even to the tips of your toes. Imagine each block in your fingertips being pushed out by this wave and becoming those beautiful fireworks you saw before…Yes, as the wave touches the blocks, each block is forced out of your fingertips into tiny, beautiful fireworks…green, blue, red, yellow… each tiny firework is your stress, tension, anxiety, whatever you wanted to get rid of that caused your stress. Each firework is the negative energy you have been carrying around all this time that was causing you to be less than your best physically, spiritually, mentally, and emotionally. Notice that as you experience each tiny firework, you feel better than ever. Move your neck, shoulders, arms, and hands NOW…experience what it feels like to be totally relaxed and stress free…let me know you have experienced it by moving your right index finger.
In fact, when you finish this session, you will feel better than you have ever felt. You will feel as though you just had a two-hour nap…feeling refreshed and wonderful. You will sleep deeply at night…getting the deep nourishing, healing rest to make you your best. You noticed we started this session at 4:ooPM. This session feels like it has lasted an hour. In fact, you will ask me if it has been an hour since we started as soon as you are wide-awake. When you open your eyes, you will ask if it is 5:00PM BECAUSE you are feeling so rested and relaxed. (Convincer #2 -It took only 20 minutes for all of this…experience).
Red will be a special color to you now…every time you see red, you will remember that you have control over stress BECAUSE you can take a deep breath and relax before making any decision that caused stress before. Water will become extremely important to you, as you will drink 8 to 10 glasses per day. Water is the true healing drink and with each new glass you will love it more and more. In fact, water will become your drink of choice. Subconscious, I ask for your complete support for Maria and Kiresha and that these things happen for them because they deserve to feel wonderful. Confirm your support by moving your right index finger. Great!
Maria and Kiresha, you have been so wonderful today. You are feeling better than ever, rested, stress free, and will enjoy your families in a fresh way tonight. You will call me or come by to tell me how wonderful your experience with hypnosis has been. Now I am going to count to four, bringing you gradually back to wide-awake and feeling great! You will keep your eyes closed until I snap my fingers. When I snap my fingers, you will open your eyes. ONE…sense the room you are in…hear the sounds around you…there are three of us here…you are safe. TWO…begin to feel the circulation of the blood in your body…notice how totally relaxed you are! THREE..feel the chair you are sitting in…notice how wonderfully relaxed you are in it! FOUR…without opening your eyes, come back to complete awareness…you are totally aware and awake…SNAP!
Maria and Kiresha open their eyes with big smiles on their faces (see this a lot!). Both ask me for the time as it must be 5:00 PM! Imagine how surprised they were to see it was only 4:20PM! I asked how they felt and they confirmed being stress free and feeling like they just had a nap! They remembered the increased desire for water and the color red. We talked for at least five minutes…(post hypnotic is just as important) on how they would begin to control stress with the help of their subconscious minds. I gave them a simple tape and suggested listening to it as often as possible. We went over the safe use of the tape: when to listen, when not to listen, and the 5-10 minutes for recovery.
They thanked me and left, adding to the numbers of people I have personally seen, who wonder if it was A Simple Miracle…Hypnosis!
